A few interesting facts about Darren, Julia, Nobby and Weird Grape …

  • Nobby Travels is the creation of husband and wife team, Darren (34) & Julia (32) Spence.  On 15th October 2007 Darren presented the books on the hit BBC Show Dragons’ Den.  The day the filming took place, Julia gave birth to the couple’s first child, Thomas
  • The first series of Nobby Travels was launched on 1st November 2007
  • There are 6 books in the Nobby Travels series, with 5 more being launched on 1st June 2008
  • The books are aimed at 4-9 year olds and feature a globe-trotting Chocolate Labrador puppy called Nobby
  • Darren & Julia were inspired to write the books by their own Chocolate Labrador, Branston, whose Kennel Club name is Nobby
  • Through Jan-Dec 08 BMI Baby adopted Nobby as their main kids character in their in-flight magazine called “Yeah Baby”
  • To increase efficiency and get things moving, Darren & Julia decided to set up their own company to publish the books, Weird Grape Ltd
  • On 17th January 2008, Weird Grape was shortlisted in the IPG 2008 Independent publishing awards “Innovation of the Year” category (the winner will be announced on 8th March 2008) – please see, www.ipg.uk.com
  • Senior England footballers including Sean Wright Philips, Jermaine Defoe, Ashley Cole and Wayne Bridge agreed to have their pictures taken reading the books to help inspire youngsters, especially boys, to read
  • Nobby has his own column in two magazines
